The part nobody sees but every good floor depends on. Here's why subfloor preparation, levelling and old-floor removal are worth getting right.
It's tempting to focus entirely on the flooring you can see, but the condition of the subfloor underneath has a huge bearing on how the finished job looks and lasts.
Removing old flooring properly, rather than laying over it, avoids trapping damp, uneven surfaces or old adhesive that can telegraph through a new floor over time, particularly with LVT and vinyl, which show up every imperfection underneath.
Levelling and latexing an uneven subfloor prevents hollow spots, creaking and premature wear, and ensures wood and laminate boards click and lie correctly instead of gapping over time.
The right underlay matters too: it affects sound, comfort underfoot, and how well moisture is managed, particularly over concrete subfloors.
